1st Salzach Symposium by TUM and the City of Burghausen

What is going to happen to the Lower Salzach river? Experts and affected will discuss the current state of the riverbed’s redevelopment during an interdisciplinary, transnational symposium for the first time.

On February 6th, 2018 the joint series of events "Agriculture and Environment" by the TUM Science & Study Center Raitenhaslach and the City of Burghausen will focus on the future of the river Salzach as natural reserve and economic area. As an expert from the Technical University of Munich, Prof. Dr. Jürgen Geist, full professor at the Chair of Aquatic Systems Biology at TUM School of Life Sciences Weihenstephan, will give a talk on "Water Use and the Protection of Biodiversity".

The straightening of the Salzach during the past decades led to an acute lack of bedload (loose rocks) in the river. During times of high water, problematic depressions in the riverbed can occur due to this lack. These can end in a "breaking" of the river bottom, which can affect buildings, bank structures and the ground water level.

Especially at the Lower Salzach river, redevelopment measures are much-needed in order to prevent the above mentioned damages in the riverbed. At present, several possibilities are under discussion of how to secure the river bottom and revive the pasture landscape. For that, the 1st Salzach Symposium is to be a forum: In the Red Salon at the TUM Science & Study Center invited scientists, deputies of affected communities, of interest groups and of the tourism sector from both Austria and Bavaria will get a chance to work out joint solutions.
